Google Offers Ready To Compete

AARP

Google Offers

Remember when Google tried to acquire Groupon for $6 billion a few months ago? Well, Groupon rejected that offer to prepare for a $15 billion IPO and that got Google angry. Well, not really, but in true entrepreneurial spirit, they decided to launch an offers site of their own.

Google’s Groupon competitor will be called Google Offers and operate similarly to Groupon or Living Social. Users will get a deal of the day and have 24 hours (presumably) to purchase the deal. If enough people have bought into the offer to make it worthwhile for the business, the offer is triggered and users receive their deal. Google will also continue to run Google Coupons under the Offers name, which does not require a purchase from consumers and is simply local web-based advertising for businesses. It’s expected that Google will find a way to show both services through Google Maps.

Google Offers will probably be powered Google’s own checkout service and include a host of sharing options for the deals to spread virally. Think Facebook, Twitter, Google Reader, Google Buzz or regular old ancient email. And while there is no hard launch date for actual offers, you can be super sneaky and see some coupons hiding in the search engine by searching “coupons site:maps.google.com intitle:Google Offers” or downloading the iGoogle Offers gadget and searching for deals in your location.

Because of the convenience offered – so many of us already use Gmail, iGoogle or Google Maps – I think this service is really going to take off. Businesses are signing up in droves and it seems to be a win-win-win for Google, businesses and consumers.

For less than $2 a month you can get benefits like better rates for sponsored coverage on health, auto and homeowner’s insurance, tremendous deals on travel (airfare, car rental, hotels, cruises) and that’s just to name a few.

The AARP is also a heavy advocate in Washington, lobbying for members on the issues that matter to you most like healthcare, retirement and social security.

So if you’re not already a member, you might consider signing up here, where you can add a spouse for free. Here are some of the current membership rates:

1 year for $16.00 ($16/yr)

Stock Up For Savings

Coupon Instructor Jill Cataldo

Coupon Instructor Jill Cataldo

Coupon workshop instructor Jill Cataldo has a money-saving mantra for anyone looking to save. The most expensive time to buy a product is when you actually need it.

And if you think about it, she’s right. When stores know an item is in demand, like say a winter coat in late fall, they’ll capitalize on prices. But in the off-peak times stores are willing to settle for much less. That’s why Cataldo shops in sales cycles, whether it be the department store or the grocery store.

For groceries, Cataldo says the name of the game is stockpiling. There are tons of non-perishable items – think toilet paper, canned foods, deodorant or detergent that you are always going to need. So when you see a deal, don’t just buy what will get you through the next week or month. Buy enough for six months and avoid paying full price on items for a longer period of time.

Sure, it may be a change from how you’re used to shopping, but the fact is this strategy is bound to save you some cash over the course of a year. For more coupon tips and tools, visit Jill’s website here.

French tennis star Jean René Lacoste made is unintentional foray into fashion when he revealed his trademark sports performance shirt during a tennis match in 1929. His Four Musketeers team was the first to win the Davis Cup from the Americans, and consequently, the American press nicknamed Lacoste, “The Crocodile,” highlighting his tenacity and spunk. After retiring from tennis, Lacost founded La Chemise Lacost in 1933 and began producing his trademark shirt–complete with the signature crocodile logo (some say it’s an alligator) embroidered on the chest. The brand expanded rapidly into sportswear, and eventually fragrance. Hits include sporty fragrances like Lacoste, Inspiration, Cool Play, Hot Play, Junior and Red Style in Play.
